One thing all mountain bikers have in common is their ambition. Whether it’s pros looking to pull off jaw-dropping stunts, or weekend riders taking on the latest local pursuit – they are a breed of athlete far from shy when it comes to pushing boundaries.
Which is why we wanted to bring you some of the world’s most epic mountain bike trails…
For years, 100-mile bike rides have been the holy grail of road cycling, and now mountain bikers have set their sights on the magic number too.
With only a small handful of 100-milers for mountain bikers to choose from, sometimes they have to settle for a little less. But that doesn’t mean they’re any less challenging!
Here, we round up some of the best mountain bike marathons in the world. (We’ve also included the race dates, just in case you want to challenge yourself).
Enjoy!
Dolomiti Superbike – Italy
We kick things off with the infamous escapade that is the Dolomiti Superbike.
As one of the first mountain bike marathons to hit Europe, this is a popular jaunt for many riders and offers something for athletes at all levels. Whilst the gutsy can take on the 74 mile, 3.822 altimeter route, those looking to ease their way in can test themselves across the 36 mile, 1.688 altimeter trail.
In the heart of the Dolomites, the route is surrounded by idyllic views. But don’t be fooled, this is a stomach-churning endurance race like no other!
Insane climbs and tough descents complement the stunning views, making this mountain bike marathon one to remember.
Make it a ride to remember: one thing we love about this course is that it’s just as much fun to ride clockwise, as it is anti-clockwise. Once you think you’ve conquered the mighty marathon one way, turn around and feel the pain all over again.
Race day: the Dolomiti Superbike runs at the start of July.
Montafon Marathon – Austria
This is just one of many incredible MTB marathon routes in Austria. Whilst it’s not the country’s biggest marathon (check out the 131 mile Salzkammergut here), it’s certainly one you need to add to your bucket list.
Whether you’re after a gentle 18 mile, 360 altimeter ride or a gruelling 81 mile, 4,500 altimeter struggle, with four distances to choose from this course is as diverse as it is spectacular. This means there’s something for everyone – so there’s no excuses not to give it a go!
Make it a ride to remember: to ensure you can give it your all, make sure you prepare some pretty tough, technical challenges. Mastering sharp corners and sudden drop offs will put you in greater stead to handle the endurance element of the course.
Race day: the Montafon Marathon usually takes place on the last weekend of July.
The Grand Raid Marathon – Switzerland
A MTB marathon that will leave your muscles feeling battered, The Grand Raid Marathon draws in riding heros year on year – and it’s not for the stunning views of the Swiss canton of Le Valais…
Picturesque backdrops of the Swiss Alps won’t mean anything as you take on tough terrains and unbelievable physical tests.
It is a route that demands a tailored training plan to avoid lung-busting errors, but this intense trail bestows you with some serious bragging rights – believe us!
For enduro enthusiasts there’s a 78 mile, 5025 altimeter (!!) route to embark on. And a shorter 23 mile, 1845 altimeter trail is available for you marathon rookies!
Make it a ride to remember: a highlight of this legendary trail is the terrain – even if it does require an intense effort to maintain your control!
Race day: you can usually compete against MTB’s greatest at The Grand Raid Marathon in the middle of August.
We’re big believers that Europe is home to some of the most amazing marathon mountain bike rides in the world, but we just had to extend our horizons for these epic marathon trails…
The Otway Odyssey – Australia
An endurance course known for its many technical descents and leg blitzing hills, The Otway Odyssey is renowned as Australia’s most respected marathon trail. And it has certainly earned its place on our list!
This is a trail that combines everything mountain bikers love – a single track with swift shifts between quick downhill shreds, technical challenges and uphill struggles. All whilst you enjoy charming surroundings and a vibrant atmosphere.
But don’t worry – if you want to ease yourself into the intense 62 miler, try the 31 mile Shorty or 19 mile Rookie.
Make it a ride to remember: conquer your confidence and determination on singletracks and you’ll be onto a winner. It’s the sharp corners and quick sprints that make this route and will drive your adrenalin to a whole new level.
Race day: the race usually resides in February.
Vietnam Mountain Bike Marathon – Vietnam
The fact this route is split over three days hints at just how epic it is!
- Stage one: 31 miles, 1450 altimeter
- Stage two: 42 miles, 1600 altimeter
- Stage three: 19 miles, 750 altimeter
Set in remote regions of Vietnam, each day presents a new test for riders. From gruelling uphill climbs, to adrenalin boosting descents – this marathon requires skill and motivation.
But with stunning views and indescribable surroundings, the location rewards you for all your hard work!
If you’re looking for a ride that will blow your mind, as well as your lungs, then this is the one for you.
Make it a ride to remember: there are some seriously killer climbs to dig your cleats into here! Grit your teeth, and power your legs to enjoy the flowing descents!
Race day: you can take part in this event during November.
You’re in for a ride, so prepare!
If one of these has caught your eye and you’re keen on trying out your nearest mountain biking marathon, then there are a few things to keep in mind.
This is something every rider wants to cross off their trail bucket list, but it can quickly become a riding nightmare if you haven’t prepared properly.
Before you jump in, make sure you have considered the following:
- Skill: before heading out on any trail, make sure you have an understanding of the technical challenges ahead of you – especially if this is a completely new terrain for your wheels!
- Endurance: your body is going to feel it – even on the trails that don’t quite hit 50 miles. Try and incorporate long rides into your training ahead of the marathon.
- Nutrition: work out what you need and can eat before, during, and after the ride. You want to be able to deliver a stand out performance, and won’t be able to do so with inadequate nutrition!
- Equipment: it’s not just your body and mind that are going to be challenged during a marathon – your equipment is just as important. Whether it’s your clothes or your bike, make sure they are all in top condition and ready for the pursuit.
But most importantly, be ready to have fun – it will be a ride to remember!
