For the tough-skinned and mentally strong, mountain biking is an all-year-round sport. Little stops gnarly riders from jumping in the saddle and taking on the trail, come rain, wind, snow, or storm.
Realistically though, winter signals more down time and less opportunity to feed your MTB bug…
We know taking one, two, or even three months out of biking can be frustrating. Which is why we wanted to share some of our favourite winter escapes with you – perfect for any mountain biker who wants to minimise time spent off the trail.
1. Madeira
Don’t be put off by Madeira’s reputation as a playground for pensioners.
Sure, its promise of year-round sunshine attracts those looking for somewhere comfortable and warm to relax. But this misjudged Portuguese island, off the northwest coast of Africa, has a chaotic side that’s made for adrenaline junkies.
For a long time, this little known mountain biking paradise has welcomed a small concentration of dedicated riders, but with word of its spectacular terrain and scenery spreading quick, it won’t be secret much longer.
Scattered with dusty trails, dirt roads, muddy paths, and rock and root hills, Madeira has plenty of trails begging to be discovered by the next adventurer.
Just be prepared for a couple of bumps and bruises to go with your winter tan, and you’ll be ready for a trip of a lifetime.
Who should go?
It really is the perfect place for all, whatever your discipline – cross country, enduro, freeriding, or downhill. But you downhill daredevils might get an extra kick from this place, as it’s home to the 5.72km course that has hosted the annual Downhill Avalanche every December since 2008.
Average temperature/Rainfall
Between November – February, you’ll be able to warm your toes in temperatures of up to 21°C. On average though, you’re looking at around 17°C.
Rainfall also decreases as we go through the months; while November starts at a modest 90mm, February offers just an average of 72mm.
Utah has made a name for itself in the mountain biking world in the last 30 years, and rightly so. It’s brimming with bright red, dry sandy descents and slickrock trails that’ll soon get the bloody pumping.
But while the concrete-like terrain improves traction, helping you take on some of the tougher obstacles, don’t expect an easy ride. Utah is unforgiving. If you bottle it, you’ll fall hard.
Renowned for its sky-high temperatures, there’s no reason why you won’t be able to enjoy rides in the sun this winter.
Who should go?
If you’ve got a soft spot for freeriding, pack your bags and head on over to the ‘birthplace’ of your passion.
Utah is also a great location for riders with less experience, as there are plenty of guided tours and multi-day trips to take advantage of.
Average temperature/Rainfall
Due to the sheer size of Utah, here are the average temperatures for the south and west – both areas which see the warmest temperatures between November – February.
Temperatures could reach up to 19°C. Take your eyes off the sun though, and you could end up in sub zero climates!
Although temperatures could drop, you don’t have to worry about rainfall too much when riding in Utah. November sees the highest average rainfall in this time, of around 45mm, while it drops to just 37mm in January.
3. La Palma
It’s not just the fantastic weather that helped La Palma capture our hearts. A haven for green forests, volcanoes, coastal cliff tops, and valleys, the trails leave you wanting more and more.
Following ancient pathways that give the trails inimitable character, and ramp up the technical challenges, we just know you’ll be blown away by every adventure La Palma has to offer.
Be warned though, while temperatures should be warm and pleasant between October and April, La Palma’s spectacular descents of up to 2km in altitude could mean you face some slightly colder conditions at the trails’ peaks.
Who should go?
Again, this is the perfect location for most types of riders – you just have to find the trail for you.
With top quality rentals available, there’s no need to lug your bike to the airport. Family adventures are easily accessible too.
Average temperature/Rainfall
Between November – February, you’ll enjoy temperatures of up to 24°C. However, expect averages to come out at around a toasty 19°C.
Rainfall is also very low, with just an average of 57mm in February. November might see more rain, with an average of 70mm.
We couldn’t write a post like this and not mention New Zealand, could we?
If it’s not forest trails and sheep littered farm tracks you’re after, then how about abandoned railways and purpose built trails that sharply snake through mountain peaks? Home to a plenty of epic trails and terrains, New Zealand makes the perfect stomping ground for every mountain biker this winter.
And if hitting these trails hasn’t already got your heart racing, then the weather should do a pretty good job. Take a trip between December to February for balmy summer days.
Who should go?
Despite being a hot-spot for many a pro-rider, New Zealand is one of the most sought after destinations for keen riders of all abilities.
There’s also a variety of tours available if you don’t feel comfortable taking on the thrills alone.
Average temperature/Rainfall
New Zealand is massive, so it’s difficult to pinpoint exact temperatures. As a general rule though, November – February will bring long, sunny days of anywhere between 20°C – 30°C.
An advantage of such gorgeous warm temperatures, is minimal rain. However, when it comes to New Zealand, make sure you expect the unexpected.
5. Malaga, Spain
Malaga is a mecca for mountain bikers, especially those looking to escape the winter elements. And there’s no question as to why…
This beautiful coastal location boasts a variety of terrain, like loose hardpack, slabrock, shale, pine forest loam, and deep sand. Pair this with impressive jumps, steeps and drops, and you’ve got the complete package. It’s got everything.
Known for its authentic riding experience, Malaga is perfect for mountain bikers looking for a challenge.
Who should go?
Whether you’re chasing thrills or want to enjoy a hassle free trail, Malaga has everything you need for an unforgettable riding experience. From technical downhill sections to untouched remote singletracks, the choice is yours.
Average temperature/Rainfall
While Malaga might be slightly cooler than its winter escape compadres, you can still enjoy temperatures of up to 20°C between November – February. Average temperatures in this time will be around 14°C.
Rainfall will drop off the further you get into winter, with November expected to deliver around 101mm of rain, and February just 60mm.
